How to let go of an outcome

A reflection on the difference between your next step and its outcome.

Separate the step from the result

Think of a message you are waiting to receive. You may be able to write clearly, ask a question or decide when to follow up. You cannot choose the other person’s reply.

Notice the urge to know

Wanting certainty is understandable. Instead of arguing with that feeling, you might quietly name it: I would like to know how this turns out. There is no need to force it away.

Choose one thing that is yours

What small action is available now? Perhaps it is sending a thoughtful message. Perhaps it is returning to something else while you wait. Letting go can mean leaving the result open while still caring about what you do.
